It starts with the scent.

Not just any scent, but something primal, older than memory, older than time itself. (well, maybe not time itself, but the stuff is old.)

It’s the kind of smell that grabs you by the schnoz and drags you deep into the woods, where the ancient trees stand tall, and their evergreen spines brush the sky. A festive, friendly forest. Maybe a place Bob Ross would camp. However, being located in the PAA Universe...it's also no doubt, a place where shadows crawl, secrets linger, and the air itself is electric and alive. So...chaotic neutral, right? (some will get this.)

Douglas Fir isn’t just a fragrance, it’s an invitation. Step in if you dare, I mean we do have a thermos of hot chocolate with your name on it...but be warned: the happy forest doesn’t let everyone leave. (get it?)

The Summer Legend Reborn For Winter

It was May 6, 2015, oddly enough, and for a brief, shimmering moment, Douglas (Fir) graced the world. It was only available as an Aftershave/Cologne at first, a special limited offering in our then loyalty program. Probably less than 100 bottles were made. It was also originally just called Douglas...but even that name never appeared on the label. Just the silhouette of a Douglas Fir, and we needed to call it something, right? So "Douglas" it was. I'm a funny guy, eh? That holiday, we released a Limited Edition of Douglas once more, and this time with a matching shave soap...that's it! Just a simple bundle.

By 2016 it was gone! (but talk of it had only just begun)

"A scent so rich, so hauntingly epic, it was like walking straight into a storybook, one of the old ones, where witches lived in gingerbread houses and wolves waited in the dark."

After it was discontinued time passed and the elders whispered of it. Those who wore it spoke of frost-covered mornings, deep, resinous woods, and a sweetness that clung to the skin like the memory of first snow. Others claimed it never existed at all. Newb Shave Cadets wanted it "scent unsniffed", they just knew they needed it. (there were also a heck of a lot of rather demanding posts and emails.)

So we brought it back in 2024 as a seasonal release after almost a decade! The time was right.

Now once again, the legend is back and as a full collection, CUBE and all. And an even newer label for the entire collection! Woohoo!

Here’s what you’ll find when you enter the haunted, holiday forest at the edge of the PAA Universe...

Douglas Fir is more than a scent. It’s a magical doorway framed in evergreen and holly. Fun Fact: Some say the smell of evergreen trees keeps evil spirits at bay. Some also say it attracts them. Which one is true? Get back to us on that, for posterity.

The Forest’s Secrets Revealed (important stuff)

The Douglas Fir isn’t what you think it is. For one, it’s not a true fir, it belongs to its own genus, Pseudotsuga. But names are just words, and the forest doesn’t care about those. (same here. #irony)

What the forest does care about is history. The Douglas Fir has been standing tall for centuries, used by shipbuilders, carpenters, and anyone with the guts enough to take its timber. It has also long been in nature's medicine cabinet too! Traditionally, medicine folk have used its needles to cure colds, and its resin to close wounds! Then there were sailors of yore that would consume it for its vitamin c content as a scurvy preventative tonic! It's still used medicinally today for a host of modern ills. (some like to shave with it i'm told.) ;)

A Warning to Shave Cadets

The forest doesn’t call everyone. Some will pass this by, too busy, too distracted by residual holiday madness, too afraid even of the label. But for those who feel the pull, who hear the rustle and whisper of the trees even when they’re city slicking, this is your chance to dance under the chilly moon of the winter woods. (sober and bundled up, of course.)

But be quick. Legends around here like this don’t linger. And neither does the season!

Step Into the Forest of Douglas Fir, Just don’t forget the way out!

Why is Preshave Soap BETTER Than Preshave Oil?

Well first off, as with anything in life, it all comes down to personal preference. I can tell you why I think it's better, but in the end, do what works for you! First off, unlike using oil, a Preshave Soap will not gunk up your gear and rinses away easy.

I was seriously turned off by all the clean up involved when using oils. Plus I was always concerned about it getting into my favorite brushes undetected and going rancid. Also, applying oil with your hands then holding onto a blade is not the safest move in my book. [That said, if you currently use an oil, apply it with your non-shaver hand!] In short, Preshave Oils inspired me to find a better way!

Why a Preshave Soap is More Effective.

A preshave soap really offers more bang for your buck; for one, it's more affordable and longer lasting. Use it first to clean the face before you shave, then rinse. Then reapply the soap prior to whipping up lather: First in a circular motion, then against the grain. The soap gets under the hairs, slightly propping them up, giving the blade more surface area to "bite" on to. The glycerin acts as a humectant pulling more water into the hair, prepping and softening it, thus making it a bigger target to mow down!

Cube Preshave Soap

CUBE?

The release of CUBE has been a long time coming. For those who are privy to the PAA Universe, you may have seen CUBE hovering in the background on different labels and in ads...observing. I have read a few interpretations by folks in the forums who have noticed CUBE's appearances and have been flummoxed. What Does it Mean? [I super appreciate that folks are becoming more hip to the universe in our labels!]

What Strange Shave Tech is This?

It's great to finally bring CUBE to life for people to interface with! Holding it in your hand you can almost feel a force, an energy pulsating, drawing you in. However, all I can say at this time is, all shall be revealed in a future installment of the saga. Until then, embrace the mystery of CUBE and use it wisely!
