Scent Profile: A deceptively simple looking recipe, yet I assure you, it's an epic, heady blend of spiced rum, myrrh, *spikenard, Jerusalem Pine, a splash of lavender and a dash of cinnamon. Not a true bay rum by far but it definitely shares some DNA! *Not only was spikenard used for it's unique scent but also for its lite cooling effect! Not as straight forward as say menthol, but many of you will notice this stuff for sure!
A Very Brief History Part 1
Back in the day (early 40s - late 60s) It was either this stuff or that other popular scent by Shulton's that your grandpappy and for some, great grandpappy were wearing! Seriously, for Christmas or Chanukah you were getting a gift set of Seaforth or Old Spice, no way around it! Since they were both sold at the same price in similar, handsome gift sets, and both got the job done, it was really just a matter of fragrance. Were you a Seaforth fella or an Old Spice kinda guy?
Like Old Spice, Seaforth also had their iconic shave mugs and earthenware jugs for aftershaves, lotions and powders. You can still find them on ebay and in antique shops across the country, yet hardly, if ever, containing a precious drop of this badass booty! Except the talc, you will always be able to find a full jug of the talc for some reason. [I actually suspect it was just a little cumbersome to use as a powder dispenser.]
As you know, we have made it our mission to bring back to life long forgotten classic, iconic scents of yesteryear. I truly feel this to be a service to the community for there are sooooo many once greats now lost to time. I'm doing my darndest to find them all but some classics are just gone. All that remain are a few adverts, vague forum mentions, or empty jugs and highly stylized dried up decanters. At least it's something I suppose but all we can do is daydream & speculate what these curiosities once held! The mysterious fragrances, the burn, the many colors! These are more than mere objects or Cracker Barrel decor, but sacred relics with muted voices trying hard to tell their tales! I think I'm supposed to make a message in a bottle joke here? *Refrains (yw)
Honestly and all jokes aside, Seaforth! Spiced! was VERY Close to disappearing itself. Sure, the old ceramic whiskey bottles on EBay are a dime a dozen but again they are almost ALWAYS empty. Fun Fact: Turns out those containers were not the best for long term storage.
If you follow what I do, then you know I am an avid collector of vintage aftershaves. Spiced! was my holy grail (as was Heather), but try as I might I could never find the stuff anywhere. Seriously, Seaforth! was a ghost! I dare you to try and find some. I have looked for the better part of 7 years and then one day last winter...there it was, Seaforth! Spiced! Full Bottle!!!! It cost a small fortune too but it would prove to be a much worthy investment I swear!
Admittedly, the day it arrived, I was steadying myself for some serious disappointment as I unboxed it. I mean, I had literally dreamt of this magical, just out of reach scent! But, I am super stoked to report back, it did not let me down. The juice, though over 50 years old, was pure and potent spicy, rummy voodoo, as fresh in that first whiff as it was when it left the McKelvy factory so many years before!
In my mind, THIS is what Old Spice was going for back in the day but never really attained. Don't get me wrong, I have a soft spot in my heart for Old Spice but when compared side by side, I will grab the Spiced! every time! So we immediately began the process of rebooting this scent note for note! By Spring 2020 Diver Down was on the shelf and maturing (aging like a fine liquor). *Note, at this point the splash and EDP have been maturing for over 1/4 of this year!
A Very Brief History Part 2
Seaforth! burst on the scene shortly after Old Spice in the late 1930s. And much like the competition, they too offered ceramic containers, mugs, talc, aftershave, shave soap, etc. As I mentioned above, they really gave Old Spice a run for their money offering their wares & wonders at the very same retail price!
Anyways, time passed and they kept doing what they did, growing as a force to be reckoned with and introducing new scents here and there. Spiced! arrived just in time for the 1953 holiday season and man was it a hit. Again, when compared side by side with Old Spice I really feel like Spiced! won. It takes a classic bay rum-esque fragrance and really puts a spin on it...clearly, this would resonate with me, right?
Sadly, the company lost its place in the market for many different reasons and eventually closed their doors in the late 80s. Now, almost 30 years later, we are resurrecting this bad boy of a fragrance! I should also add, Old Spice would not be what it is today if they were not constantly doing battle against Seaforth. That ongoing rivalry kept both of them relevant and on top of their respective games. But there can ever be only one winner...sometimes. Diver Down hopes to change all that!
WARNING...
You will be tempted to wear this stuff all year round and no doubt want to use it everyday. Pairs well with a pipe and sweater, or Christmas dinner. Then there's the beach or the gym, or maybe around a campfire! The point I'm making is, Diver Down is just a versatile, timeless, magical classic! The scent alone also makes for a great conversation starter! Remember, it has been decades since anyone has really had their nose on this stuff! One whiff is like time travel for your schnoz!
Enjoy my friends and maybe consider pairing Diver Down with a classic Gillette war year razor or straight to really pile on the nostalgia! SHAVE ON & Stay Groovy!
