5 essential notes make up this blend of our classic Autumn shave soap. 5 notes, like 5 colors on a painters palette, mingling in a mid-afternoon, mid-autumn day on a canvas in an orchard. A few feet away is the cider house come to life in a bustle of festive activity and mirth.

Someone is smoking a pipe, mulled seasonings catch flight on the warm wind, *oak barrels rock in the rhythmic ripples of the cider press, leaves crackle beneath the artists feet....linseed oil lingers, and an apple possibly plucked by Eve herself is offered to bite. The artist drinks it all in...This is Ciderhouse 5.

*I took a tip from my Master Brewer friend Aaron and added some Toasted American Oakwood Cubes to the aftershave as it matured over the weeks and man what an aromatic splash did happen! Traditionally Bourbon is fermented in Oak Barrel casks and over the years brewers have found more economical ways to create that same effect by using toasted oakwood chips or cubes. Since traditional perfuming and brewing have some similarities Aaron thought he'd share this idea with me...brilliant!

I originally "matured" or steeped the oak in alcohol to see if there really was something to his theory and after a week I was a believer! A sweet, chocolate, vanilla, woody, tonka, almost grape type swirl of scent escaped the jar as I opened it....Ciderhouse 5 is Back and Better Than EVER! Hats off to Brewmaster Aaron!

Our Ciderhouse 5 Aftershave/Cologne starts where the soap left of with a few additional ingredients, thus making it the perfect pair. I chose *Chamomile Hydrosol as a "grace note", filling in space and adding body. Aside from adding scent wise, Chamomile Hydrosol also makes a great gentle astringent and toner.

As for the other natural, "face saving" ingredients you will find: Glycerin, Carrot Extract, Seaweed Extract, Liquid Silk, Aloe Vera and Alum!

Glycerin

Glycerin is what is called a humectant, meaning that it attracts water. When glycerin or glycerol is applied to the skin, it seals in moisture that might otherwise escape. Glycerin helps maintain the skin's water balance on an intercellular level. In easier-to-understand language, glycerin in lotions or other skin care products can help prevent or combat dry skin.

Liquid Silk

Silk amino acids, also known as silk protein or sericin, are the jelly like proteins that bind the tiny fibers in silk. They are used to help prevent dehydration of the skin and help strengthen hair. They come from the silk worm, which aren’t actually worms but caterpillars despite their name.

These acids have a low molecular weight, which allows them to be easily absorbed deep into the layers of skin and hair creating a defense against dryness and moisture loss. Some study’s have shown that Liquid Silk has antioxidant effects and have been shown to combat wrinkles. Is a naturally hydroscopic material. (Adj. of a substance; tending to absorb moisture from the air.) it provides excellent moisturizing and conditioning qualities. Liquid Silk can give the skin a very soft, smooth velvety feel when used in things like lotions and hand creams.

Chamomile Hydrosol

Chamomile Hydrosol is extraordinarily valuable … soothing and relaxing. Historically used to sooth dry, flaky, itchy skin, rashes, acne, eczema, etc. A compress of Roman Chamomile gently eases a migraine.

Roman Chamomile water has been especially recommended for skin care for delicate complexions with allergic tendencies. A mild astringent, it is an excellent skin toner, its astringency would benefit oily or inflamed skin.

Organic Seaweed Extract contains all major and minor plant nutrients and all trace elements.

Aloe Vera: Aloe vera has been used for a host of purposes since the ancient Egyptians called it the “plant of immortality.” Since then, its uses have become more targeted and medicinal. Aloe vera is a cactus plant that belongs to the Liliaceae family. It grows in dry climates such as those found in parts of Africa and India and has been used medicinally for centuries. Aloe leaves secrete a clear gel that when broken off from the rest of the plant that can be applied topically to heal wounds and soothe skin.

Alum is used as a post shave antiseptic, toner and all around magic healing mineral.
