Bakelite Alpha Ecliptic Slant Razor - Ox Blood

$19.95 USD

Finally, my Bakelite version of The Alpha Ecliptic!

This my friends has been a LONG time coming! For those of you who purchased our aluminum, machined version, you may have noticed on the bottom of the box there were two check boxes; one for Metal and the other for Bakelite. We really wanted to release both models at the same time, but alas, it was not to be.

You'd think by now my bakelite manufacturer would be able to wrap his head around my razor concepts...but no. Lots of Skype calls, pencil drawings and metaphor went into getting the point across. This model has actually been being worked on for as long as the metal version! So you can imagine how ecstatic I am to finally unleash this little piece of magic to the world.

The Bakelite Alpha Ecliptic is truly a 100% tribute to the original classic and very rare, Walbusch & Sohnes Humpback Razor. So much so, it would be safe to call it a replica or reboot. Same geometry, tolerances, materiel and even the same classic handle! The only difference is aesthetics...the color. The original was brown, yuck. By choosing Ox Blood, I don't think I stepped too far outside the vintage flavor and the almost marble effect on the handle is beautiful. This razor will patina up nicely!

Believing so much in this razor, I really wanted to make it readily available to the masses, hence the modest price tag. It was important for not only the fact that the head design is really phenomenal, but also to keep the history alive. These razors are practically impossible to find these days and if you do, super costly (google it). It would just pain me for this razor to disappear from wet shaving history!

A Blurb on Bakelite

Bakelite has such a rich history in the USA where it was born in 1907, created by Leo Baekeland! Did you know during the war effort, we almost minted our pennies in Bakelite, but eventually went with steel? Pool Balls were even made out of bakelite, if that tells you anything about durability. Our auto and aviation industries grew up along side Bakelite and we'd probably be 25 years behind if it wasn't for the stuff! The grand pappy of plastic was and is AMAZING and truly has 1000 uses...STILL!

Mix It Up!

If you already own the Aluminum Alpha Ecliptic, be sure to try mixing things up. All pieces are compatible with each other! (See Photos)

Besides again using brass fixing as I did with The Bakelite OC Slant, I also, once more, decided to go with a standard size post rather than the slimmer posts of the original. So the head should fit most standard size handles.

...and now for the story of The Alpha Ecliptic as told on the Original Listing:

it's pretty safe to say, The Alpha Ecliptic is truly a one of a kind...at least in our Galaxy. Holding this baby one feels something otherworldly; a vibration, a radio wave, a connection maybe? Is it a relic from the past or from the future? I'd say it's both...but i'm getting ahead of myself.

Anyone who has been following PAA and knows of our secret universe will immediately see that out of all our razors to date this one is just sooooo us. To get woo woo with our words, we tend to vibrate at the same frequency as this one!

The Origin Story

The Alpha Ecliptic is based on one of my all time favorite razors, the very, VERY rare German bakelite Walbusch "Humpback" Slant (Walbusch & Sohnes). I was very lucky to discover this razor...in fact, it was a customer that turned me onto this baby, Michael K, and I thank him very much, for my shaves have never been the same since! To say that it performed way above expectation would be the understatement of the the century!

You won’t even feel it!
Why oh why are such outstanding designs always lost to history? Maybe because it takes a little extra energy to see these creations through and most companies back in the day were all about the bottom line, not interested in recreating the wheel? Maybe the all powerful Gillette had something to do with the burying of the Walbusch or maybe, just maybe it was Merkur this time? I mean Merkur did borrow their Progress handle design from Walbusch...I can only speculate, but man oh man, you gotta wonder why this design wasn't explored fully.
Another fine example of Walbusch's cutting edge innovations is their Adjustable Slant of the very same head design...talk about way ahead of their time! You probably, like most, never even heard of such a thing, maybe even thought that was your own original idea, as I did, lol.
What is with the shape Doug?
First off, the razor features a unique humpback design which helps guide the user to the proper blade angle for an almost effortless shave. The slant design is a diagonal rather than the more common twist or torqued models. Modern blades are great but are primarily designed for a good ol' DE Safety Razor, they were not created with the slant in mind.
What I mean to say is, we are asking a lot of some brands of blades by twisting and torquing them out so wildly, an action that can sometimes compromise the coating or integrity of the edge I suspect. Not a huge problem considering there are so many brands to experiment with, but the Alpha Ecliptic's design offers the same slant action with a more forgiving geometry for any modern DE Blade.
I would personally rate this razor low on the medium aggression plane. The perfect slant for the newb and an efficient shaver for the more experienced.

You Are Now Part of the Saga...

I really didn't expect much when I received this razor. Thought would try it and sell it.
WOW was I dead wrong. Well over fifty years of shaving this razor is simply great. Smooth and extremely close without even trying. Was going to buy a second one but they are sold out. I wonder why? Keep up the good work guys.

After receiving my much anticipated Alpha Ecliptic razor yesterday, I was able to get a couple of shave under my belt before this review. A couple of things, Doug’s recommendation of a middle of the road blade was sound; I used the Astra Platinum for the test; I agree using a Kai, Feather or Bolzano out of the chute may be but doubtfully an issue. I found loading the blade a tad more difficult to get over the posts , but I am surmising this is to assure a tight blade fit. I was concerned initially the the shape would be difficult fitting under the nose which proved easier than my Futur. I really liked the shave, good audio feedback VERY efficient and very mild. The efficiency is amazing because folks compare this to the Ikon 102..I would say it is more efficient; I had to sell my 102 because it was too mild for me. Again, my initial review is this razor is getting very close to the “mildness of a Gillette Tech, with the efficiency of a R41”. Great job Doug!
