Solstice Shaving Soap 3.0- Desert Sage, Sweetgrass, Cedar, Rose Absolute and Benzoin Resin

$14.95 USD

Scent Profile: Sage, Sweetgrass, Cedar, Rose Absolute and Benzoin Resin

Solstice is a very magical, contemplative blend of aromatics, by default adding more cred to the "Ceremony" of Wet Shaving. A true aid in turning your shave den into a truly sacred space.

Once again Solstice returns for the Summer Solstice happening right now over the next couple days. The artwork I created was inspired by Cathedral Rock in Sedona, Arizona, known as The Vortex to some.

I was lucky enough to pay visit to Sedona last year and take it all in. I can testify there is a certain vibe there, possibly just a by-product of the overwhelming natural beauty and the ancient, majestic rock formations. Being a special place for the Native Americans and their ancestors before them this seemed the perfect place to pay tribute to in the design.

While there I picked the brains of certain individuals on the traditional uses of such herbs and resins, truly fascinating stuff whether or not you subscribe to all the mystical woo woo.

SAGE - The word sage or salvia comes from the Latin word salvare, which means "To Heal.” Sage has long been used in “smudging” ceremonies to promote purification, protection, and longevity.

      • Desert Sage is one of the most sacred herbs among Native Americans used to purify the mind, body and spirit before prayer, meditation, ritual or ceremony and to purify sacred items such as pipes, bowls, and eagle feathers. The scent of desert sage is somewhat sharp, clean, light and refreshing.
      • Cedar was offered to the fire to smudge the sweat lodge and people. Its smoke is wafted to ward away sickness.
      • Sweetgrass is excellent for centering ourselves. Sweetgrass is a rare grass which is found growing wild in very few places; Sweet grass does grows high in the Rocky Mountains. It is said this grass never dies. It is one of the great smells reminding us of the mountains and open air.
      • BENZOIN GUM RESIN was used for purification and prosperity. Often used as a base for incense blends. An antiseptic, cleanses the lungs, strengthens the mind, burned for knowledge, and peace.

Sage, Sweetgrass, Cedar, Rose Absolute and Benzoin Resin, mystical stuff. Similar concoctions have been used universally across the globe in many a religious rite, purification, temple and church alike. At the end of the day us humans are really not so different.

This shaving soap is fantastic. The smell is like nothing in any shave soap I have ever used. I think the best way to describe it is, it smells like morning in the mountains or the desert after it rains. It is not a flowery scent at all, but more like dry brush and manzanita. This distant scent combined with the incredibly thick and slick lather makes for an awesome shave. The soap does not dissapate at all, and even if your pass takes five minutes, remains perfectly intact. I have a thick coarse beard, and the lather provides an excellent buffer whether using a straight razor or a 2011 Muhle R41 with a new Feather. The lather is so thick and stable that when you first use this soap you are going to think it is tallow based. I've tried three or four of the PAA soaps, but The Solstice is by far my favorite. Thanks Douglas for such a great product.

To be honest, the only reason I bought this soap is that I won the aftershave at a shave meet-up in Kansas City. Since most of the other soaps I own are either citrus (lime mostly) or spice (bay rum, etc.), I found the aftershave difficult to pair with any of them. Now that I have the matching soap, my little shaving universe has balance. I did not find the scent strength particularly strong, but with a scent like this, I don't think you would want it very strong. Besides, the matching aftershave makes up for it. It is a warm, smoky (but not acrid), slightly sweet scent that is really quite nice. Performs like a champ regarding lather and slickness. Will be used when I want something different from the usual, probably more in the fall and winter, it just seems to lend itself to that. Wonderful soap!

I'm going to go out on a limb here. I've tried a dozen or so PAA soaps, they are basically all excellent. But the woodsy smoky-cabin scent of the Solstice so perfectly matches the wildness of the western United States that it makes me feel like I'm shaving in front of a campfire in the Sierras. I get about 25-30 shaves per "tin" and I look forward to every one of them. It is my favorite go-to shave soap period from any company.
